Playing dress-up in my sister’s closet – Carrie Bradshaw style!

When my sister told me that she and her husband were remodeling their master bedroom, including bathroom and closet, I knew the outcome would be amazing because she has impeccable taste. But, little did I know that the closet would be the “piece de resistance”. Imagine Carrie Bradshaw walking into Big’s apartment, seeing her DREAM closet becoming reality. Ah yeah, that…only BETTER!

I remember the day, my sister Tristen, ecstatic, showing me the cabinetry plans and grinning from ear to ear. As she flips through the different elevations, she pauses, and says, oh, and here’s the bar. My response, “What! A freaking bar?” Her response, “I may get thirsty…”  Well played sis, well played. Honestly….who am I to deprive someone of hydration? Even though it comes in the form of Prosecco?

Dry bar - the large drawers are actually a fridge and freezer!

Success! After the husband stepped in to save the day (though we loosened them, right? Totally!!)

Let the games begin!

In July, the remodel was complete and from that point on, I was scheming and plotting of a plan to weasel my way into her closet and play dress up. Yes, you heard it correctly...dress up! For those of you who don’t know me personally (which is the vast majority of you), I have long coveted my sisters’ wardrobe. Yes, mine is “ok” but pales in comparison to hers where all the major players are present - Gucci, Prada, Chanel, Jimmy Choo, Louis Vuitton, Fendi, and Hermes, just to name a few. It makes my wardrobe look lackluster to say the least. Many of the designer pieces in my wardrobe were given to me by my sister. Cough cough…Christian Louboutin, Prada, and Louis Vuitton. I gladly take my sisters’ “seconds”. It would be a shame for them to be given away to a complete stranger; they deserve a good, loving home after all.

Let's begin with Chanel!! This is what she has at "THIS HOUSE"...Yep, there's more!

So, what do you do when you have the opportunity to write a blog post about your sister’s closet and its amazing contents? You play dress-up and imagine that one day, you too can have a closet and wardrobe this amazing. You play dress-up like it’s going out of style. You pillage through shoes, handbags, and dresses. Trying on one after another, after another…admiring yourself in the mirror for a brief moment, snapping a picture, and then quickly moving onto the next designer.

Some of you reading this post may have a closet this spectacular, so playing dress up is an everyday occurrence. Good for you!! But for most, this is not the norm. This is something that only the select few have and…you know what, that’s ok. I’m fortunate to have a sister that has impeccable taste, a dispensable budget, and who just so happens to wear the same shoe and dress size as me. Hell yeah! For me, I can shop her closet for special occasions, the clothes are taken out for a night on the town, and I look damn fabulous while doing it (saving me a few bucks in the process), it's a win, win!

And then there was a Gucci dress and Prada pumps. Yes please!

For this blog post, I was truly interested in the remodel. I wanted to know what she would “do over” if she had the opportunity and what she’d keep. Trying on dresses and shoes was just a fun added bonus! Lucky for me, my best friend Brandy was able to keep me on point while she sacrificed herself by trying on a gorgeous black Gucci dress, followed by a fabulous Roberto Cavali number, and then an AMAZING Tom Ford red lace dress (my favorite). I tried the same dress on but…given that I’m a bit lacking in the bust area, it didn’t quite look the same on me as it did her! These dresses were gorgeous. My personal favorite was the Roberto Cavalli followed by a skin tight Herve Leger (as seen above). Who would have thought that something so simple as a dress would have made me feel sexy, confident, and amazing? Like I could conquer the world. Oh, that’s right, what I was feeling was “enclothed cognition”. I’m all too familiar with how “what you wear” can have a physiological impact on your self-confidence (read my previous blog post “Dressing for Confidence”).  Regardless of the psychology, we both left my sister’s house feeling high on life…and looking for our next designer fix!

Oh Tom Ford....why are you so fabulous? But....I need a bit more "up top" to really pull this one off.

In all seriousness, are you in the market for a closet upgrade? I asked my sister if she had any “regrets”. Things she wish she would have added or done differently. The answer was NO. She worked with a designer and was able to check all of her boxes. I then asked her, “If you had to give advice to someone just getting started with their remodel, what would it be?” She quickly came up with a laundry list of items that she would “highly” recommend (oh, yeah, a bar is not one of them…but a great addition nonetheless, in case you get thirsty).

It’s all in the details

  • Cabinetry that goes to the ceiling, providing additional closed in storage in the above cabinets and eliminating a dust-collector areaCustom Designer Closet
  • Doors
    • This was a big MUST for her. All of the closets are enclosed. Preventing those items that are not worn very often from collecting dust
    • Glass doors – so you can see your wardrobe without having to open the door
  • Cabinetry lighting
    • Yes, with doors, lighting seems like a no brainer but….the lighting that she installed, extends from the top of the cabinet, down to the bottom (as shown in the picture below). So each shelf is illuminated. Providing her with visibility to everything behind the glass

  • Cabinet locks for those items that need extra protection
  • Full-sized, fireproof, and water tight safe (as seen in the picture below) that holds valuables and important documents

This safe holds gorgeous valuables like this little number. Oh yeah! I was with her when she purchased this. I'm hoping one day she gets sick of it and "donates" to me. Ha...ha!!

  • Drawer dividers
    • All of her intimates have custom dividers for easy access and organization (hard to see in the picture below...sorry)

  • Soft close doors and drawers
  • Sound system
  • Additional electrical outlets
  • Seating
    • This may seem silly but, a small chair or lounge chair comes in handy when you’re putting on your shoes (or when you need a brief moment to relax and drink your champagne).

These are just a few suggestions that will elevate your ordinary closet to….”Oh, hello lover”, Carrie Bradshaw style!
